Anna-Alisa Belous - costume designer.

Anna-Alisa was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg, Russia) and received her MFA in Interior Design and Textiles from Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design. In 1991, she relocated to the United States, where she obtained her MFA in Theatre Arts from Brandeis University. Anna-Alisa lives in New York City since 2001 and works as a freelance costume designer, scene painter, set designer, and stylist.

Anna-Alisa collaborates with modern dance companies, and she also has years of experience working in theater and opera. Additionally, she has specialized in costume restoration, prop making, wig-making, theatrical make-up, and is a hair stylist. Since 2001, Anna-Alisa has been a resident costume and set designer for Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre in NYC, and has been collaborating with Carolyn Dorfman Dance since 2009. Simultaneously she has continued working with Nai-Ni Chen, Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre, Rebecca Kelly Ballet, and Philadanco. Anna-Alisa is a stylist and costume designer for WGBH Christmas Celtic Sojourn since the 2003 launching of the project.

Her costume design credits include LAB Theater, Modus Opera, Actors’ Shakespeare Project (MA), Portland Stage Company (ME), Boston Playwrights Theater (MA), Opera Naples (FL), Alvin Ailey School, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music Opera Department, The New School for Drama, Metropolitan Ballet Academy and Company (PA), North Country Ballet Ensemble and Blessed Unrest, both as set and costumes designer. She further assisted on projects at the following prestigious venues: Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Paul Taylor Dance Co., Washington Ballet, Boston Ballet, Santa Fe Opera, American Repertory Theater, Gotham Chamber Opera, Columbia University and Milwaukee Ballet.

Anna- Alisa has experience working in film and television: TV show “Law and Order” and onset of the feature film “Red Skies”. She has also workedas a costume designer and stylist on several independent films and video projects, Including “Slow Dancing”. Anna-Alisa remade the costumes for the Martha Graham Company ballet Clytemnestra after the originals were damaged during Hurricane Sandy, and she is regularly invited to re-make and restore the company’s costumes for other ballets.

Anna-Alisa enjoys working with students and practicing her craft in college settings. She has been working at Marymount Manhattan College’s Dance Department since 2011, and was a resident costume designer for the Dance department at Williams College in 2011-2017. She taught an MFA class on Costume Rendering Techniques at Brandeis University in 2003 and has been giving invited lectures on the topic of Costume Design at Adelphi University since 2013.
